Chekkalu – A popular snack made with rice, also they are known as Nippattu in Kannada and Thattai in Tamil nadu, they can be made in different taste and texture as per region.

Ingredients for Chekkalu

  • Rice flour 200 gms
  • Chana dal 50 gms
  • Urad dal 50 gms
  • fried gram 50 gms
  • Red Chilli Powder 1tsp
  • Cumin Powder 1 tsp
  • Carom seeds (ajwain) 2 tsp
  • Butter (unsalt) 100 gms
  • Curry leaves 2 strings
  • Salt to taste
  • oil for frying
  • Water to mix the dough
  • Plastic sheet to prepare Chekkalu

Preparation of Chekkalu

  • Firstly clean, wash and soak chana dal in deep vessel
  • Secondly fry urad dal and then mix with fried gram and make fine powder of both
  • Chop curry leaves in to small rough pieces
  • Add rice flour, urad dal, red chilli powder, cumin powder, ajwain, butter, chop curry leaves, salt in to the large deep vessel. than add water as required, till the dough texture become like soft chapatti dough.
  • Drain the water from the chana dal and mix the dal with dough, then keep aside for ½ hour.
  • Mean while get ready for deep frying of chekkalu,
  • And similarly add oil in deep frying pan, heat the oil in medium flame
  • Take the plastic sheet and apply oil on the sheet.
  • Then make the dough in to small ball shapes(pedas), then press on the plastic sheet with hand to get shape like poori of small size. And remove the same gently and immerse it in to the heaten oil till it get cooked and get its texture as golden brown.
  • Finally remove from heat oil and put it in one more vessel with tissue paper, so it will suck the oil.
  • Once it comes to normal temperature serve it in quarter plate with chutney.


  • It maybe made to different shapes and sizes as per your requirement
  • Cook only in medium flame not in high/low
  • Don’t have more water and spoil the dough, add water as require.
  • Serve in the evening time has evening snacks
  • This dish will be done at festival time
