Ingredients of Beerakaya Pappu

  • Beerakaya peeled and cut into small fine pieces – 250 gms
  • toor dal/toovar dal – 150 gms
  • medium size tomatoes (chopped) – 3 No’s
  • cloves of garlic (chopped) – 4 No’s
  • green chillies  – 3 No’s
  • turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • tamarind – 10 gms
  • red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • onion (½ onion chopped and ½ onion fine sliced) – 1 No
  • Salt to taste
  • Water – 3 cps
  • oil – 2tbsp
  • mustard seeds ½ tsp
  • cumin seeds ½ tsp
  • urad dal/split black gram ½ tsp
  • dried red chillies – 4 No’s
  • curry leaves – 1 string
  • Coriander leaves – 1 string (chopped)

Preparation of Beerakaya Pappu

  • Firstly, clean and wash toor dal and put it in a pressure cooker along with Beerakaya.
  • Secondly add chopped ½ onion, garlic, tomatoes, turmeric powder, green chillies, red chilli powder, tamarind, salt and add about 2 cups of water.
  • Cook in pressure cooker for about 4 to 5 whistles, likewise remove from flame and keep aside till the pressure release.
  • Similarly prepare tadka.
  • Heat fry pan in medium flame add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, dried red chillies, curry leaves and ½ onion fine sliced.
  • Fry till the onions change to golden brown, and keep aside.
  • Once the pressure is out open the lid of pressure cooker, remove excess water.
  • And smash dhal, beerakaya along with other ingredients in cooker.
  • Know add tadka in to the dhal, and also add excess water removed from cooker.
  • If require add more water as per the consistency you required.
  • Finally heat the dhal in medium flame, once the dhal boils remove from flame.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve with white rice.


  • Use tender Beerakaya for cooking.
  • Add water as per your requirement.
  • If you don’t want to smash Beerakaya remove from cooker along with excess water and add after smashing water.
  • And if you don’t want spicier in dhal, remove green chillies before smashing dhal and then add later.
