Appam – Popular Kerala breakfast, it is also called as Palappam, a type of Pancake made with rice flour. This taste good with Vegetable Stew, Potato stew, sweet milk, coconut chutney, vegetable kurma and Kadala curry.

We can make Appam in different ways, it can be made as sweet appam using jaggery or sugar along with coconut water, appam with adding yeast, and traditionally we use to prepare appam using toddy, generally in our villages the toddy is named has KALLU. Which is taken from Palm tree or Coconut tree.

  • Rice 250 gms
  • Fenugreek ¼ tsp
  • cooked rice 250 gms
  • salt to taste
  • water as require
  • baking soda 1/8 tsp
  • coconut milk 150 ml
  • veg oil 4 tbsp


  • Firstly wash and mix the rice and the fenugreek seeds together in a water and soak for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Secondly blend it in a grinder very finely with cooked rice, salt and water.
  • Leave the batter for fermentation for about 10 to 12
  • An hour before making Appam add coconut water and baking soda and make sure the batter should be in pouring consistency.
  • Over medium heat, apply oil on a fry pan, and then once the pan is heated, pour 1 tbsp of batter on to it and spread the batter in such a way the batter forms round shape.
  • Close pan with a lid and after 2 minutes check weather the batter is completely done
  • Finally if the batter is completely done the appam is ready.
